Trying to Revive old R6400V2
Title: R6400v2 stuck in initial setup loop – web UI and Nighthawk app both fail
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to bring an older NETGEAR R6400v2 back into service, but I’ve hit a very strange setup problem. I received the router second-hand, so I don’t know its full history or whether it was originally retail or ISP-provided.
I have already performed a factory reset.
After the reset, the router broadcasts the default NETGEAR Wi-Fi networks and DHCP works. When I connect directly from my PC to a LAN port and browse to the router's gateway, instead of getting the normal admin interface it immediately redirects me to something like:
http://192.168.1.1/start.htm?<long-random-string>
The random string changes after reboot, so it appears to be a NETGEAR setup/session token rather than a fixed redirect.
My main router uses 192.168.1.1. Once I connected the R6400v2 WAN port to my main router, the R6400v2 correctly detected the subnet conflict and automatically changed its LAN to:
10.0.0.1
However, browsing directly to http://10.0.0.1 still redirects me straight back to:
http://10.0.0.1/start.htm?<random-string>
I cannot get to the BASIC/ADVANCED admin console.
I also tried the Nighthawk Android app. The app can actually detect and communicate with the R6400v2. During setup it successfully gets through several steps, including the security questions. At one point the app even reports:
Cables Connected – Yes
Internet Connected – Yes
My primary router also shows the R6400v2 as a wired connected device, so the WAN Ethernet link appears to be working.
However, the Nighthawk setup eventually reaches the Checking Firmware stage and fails. The R6400v2 Wi-Fi also frequently reports “No Internet connection”, even though the app previously reported that Internet was connected.
There was also one instance where DHCP stopped responding and Windows assigned itself a 169.254.x.x address. Power-cycling the R6400v2 immediately restored DHCP, so that appears to have been a temporary router/software issue.
At this point it seems like the router is stuck in some kind of incomplete first-run/setup state. Both the browser setup wizard and Nighthawk app get partway through setup but never complete it, and the normal web administration interface remains inaccessible.
I was planning to manually flash the latest official R6400v2 firmware (V1.0.5.128), but I also cannot seem to get the router into the documented TFTP recovery state.
During startup, my Power LED behaves like this:
Solid amber → solid white
It never reaches the flashing amber state mentioned in the NETGEAR TFTP recovery instructions.
So my questions are:
- Is there a way to bypass the start.htm first-run wizard and access the normal admin console directly?
- Is there a known issue where an R6400v2 gets permanently stuck in the initial setup wizard?
- Is there a specific button/power sequence for forcing the R6400v2 into TFTP/recovery mode?
- Can the firmware be manually flashed another way if the router boots normally but the web UI is inaccessible?
- Would clearing NVRAM/configuration differently from a standard factory reset help?
- Has anyone seen this behavior with ISP-customized firmware, or does this look like corrupted/old NETGEAR firmware?
The router itself appears healthy enough to boot, broadcast both Wi-Fi bands, provide DHCP, communicate with the Nighthawk app, and establish an Ethernet link to my primary router. It just seems unable to finish initial setup and unlock the normal administration interface.
Any ideas would be appreciated. I’ve officially spent way too many hours fighting this thing. 😅
Okay I resolved this using the nmrp flash tool. I flashed the initial release firmware using the tool and then organically upgraded to the latest version. it all went smooth. I cant believe I wasted so much time on the TFTP tool when Nmrp tool was so straight forward !! Thank you FURRYe38

Does this long random string seen in other browsers like MS Edge, Firefox or Opera?
Might try a 30-30-30 reset to see if this might help.
FTP access means you get access to FTP send networking protocol only. WEB UI is not working at this stage.
Might try this:

I also noticed that the Power light keeps flashing Orange when I press and hold the Reset button. when I release the reset button it goes back to normal behavior of resetting and rebooting. and I did try flashing the firmware while holding the reset button while the orange light is blinking... but the tftp software threw an error at me error in Recv.Error code is 10054 (An Existing Connection was forcibly closed by the remote host).

Glad you got it working. As mentioned if NG stock FW doesn't meet your needs and It's EoL, check out 3rd party FW. Maybe help extend the life of the router.
Enjoy.

I think there's a ddwrt firmware version for the R6400v2. Its EOL and if you wanted to play around with additional features, might be worth checking out.
