Website Blocking Not Working On Tablets & Phone

Hi everyone,

I am hoping for some help with a potential serious issue for me.  I run an Amazon business on my home property and we recently renovated our guest house and are booking up AirBnb reservations for the entire summer.

I have a WNR2020v2 router in the guest house and that will be the only router on the property that guests have access to.  I set up the router admin to block Amazon and all sites related to Amazon because its imperitive that our guests can't use Amazon on our network.  This is because Amazon is known to ban sellers when two different accounts are accessed from the same network. To avoid any issues, we simply blokced it on the back end.

The problem is that the router is only blocking Amazon when accessed from desktop PCs.  When trying to access Amazon from both my ipad and iphone, its still bringing me to the site.  Parental controls wont work as people will be bringing in differerent devices.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thanks

  • Hello! How about if you enable Live Parental Control OpenDNS?

When you enable Parental Control, add Amazon.com under Blacklist.

Once you have enabled Parental Control, no one should be able to connect through Amazon either on PC's or mobile/tablet devices.

  • When I connect to amazon, it https, which is hard to block. Do an nslookup amazon.com (or, wherever you are) and try blocking by IP address. You will need to block all the ips that are returned. Not sure if your router supports this.

EDIT: You could also try / include keyword blocking amazon, if your router supports keyword blocking.

I added all the keywords to the blocked keyword list, and then I added the IP addresses I pulled to the blocked keyword list, but I couldn't find anywhere to specifically block by IP??

Either way, its still allowing access to the site.

Try a rebooting your router. Then retry your keyword blocking..

Worst case, you may need to do a router upgrade. Perhpas one of the R Series router, support blocking by IP. As I mentioned, HTTPS sites are hard to block. Perhaps ElaineM may be able to advise, which router / firmware. may work for your situation.
