Can't access Nighthawk X6 R8000 (AC3200) configured as access point

I've added my router to a DSL modem/router to use as an access point.  I can no longer access or log in to my router.  I tried using the Nighthawk app but it does not let me log in.  I tried logging in from a browser on a computer connected to the Nighthawk wifi and also connected via cable to the Nighthawk with no success.  I used an advanced IP sniffer and can't even see the Nighthawk.  The Nighthawk is working perfectly as an access point but I'd like to log in to configure it for security and can't.

Did you put the R8000 in access point mode?

if so, log into the dsl router and look at its attached devices page. It should have the IP address assigned to the r8000 that you can use to access it

When you turn a router into an access point (AP), you lose the option to access it through the graphical user interface (GUI) and routerlogin.net in a web browser.

That's because the other router handles the network traffic and gives the AP its own IP address on the local network. This means that the browser GUI now has no idea where to find the AP.

You need to track down the IP address that the router has given the AP.

One way to do that is to look at the list of attached devices in the GUI for the main router. That should list the IP address of things on the network.

Look for the AP in that list and put its IP address into a browser. That should get you into the GUI for the AP.

I avoid that hunt by fixing the IP address of the AP when I put it into AP mode. (Netgear says that this not recommended but does not explain why.) Then I can always get in with that IP address.

There are other options, such as giving the AP an  "Address Reservation" in the main router.
