connect a nighthawk to mesh
Hi. Brand new to the forum.
I have a NETGEAR - Nighthawk X6 AC3200 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 5 Router currently in use. I also own a NETGEAR - Nighthawk AX8 8-Stream AX6000 Wi-Fi 6 Router (still in the box).
I have fiber optic to my house from my telephone company, but we have poor signal with the AC3200 to parts of our house. It's 1600 sqft, but two stories!
I'm thinking of getting an Orbi. What I'd like to know is can I use either of the two routers I currently own and just by the nodes rather than the whole system?
I did try the AX8 for a day or so, but the signal wasn't any better upstairs. Two kids and a husband all on games or youtube etc.

Either of those routers should be able to cover 1600 sqft if its a standard setup.
What is your interior walls made of? And floors?
Certain materials block wifi very well.
Moving to a mesh system might help but its first a good idea to determine why your signal is bad.
Maybe getting a powerline device or moca adapter (ethernet over coax) might be a better option for setting up multiple access points that just buying mesh.
- ajmedeirosAspirantWe get signal upstairs, but it stops off in spots. The router is a three back of the house, and signal strength is low on the 2nd floor at the front of the house. Several years ago, when the founder optic was installed, it was good. Over time it's slowed.
I was thinking about changing to my AX8 router and buying the AX6000 range extender. Thoughts?
