D7000 V1 Telnet & Debug Mode no longer works after upgrade

Question

I used to enable debug mode on my D7000 in order to get the statistics via Telnet (info --stats). I took a firmware upgrade (V1.0.1.80_1.0.1) and now Telnet access or debg enable no longer works.
Has the Telnet access been closed off for good or has it been changed?

I could downgrade by installing a previous firmware version but that is not a safe path to use if there are vulnerabilities.

Any ideas anyone?
