D7800 Drops VDSL2 connection when DNS changes

I have used this Router/Modem on a static WAN IP for many months without a problem.  I just changed ISP and now have their assigned WAN IP which changes daily.  I updated the D7800 to the latest FW V1.0.1.58 and used the setup wizard to find the correct settings for the new ISP.  The first time the WAN IP changed, the modem dropped the VDSL connection but recovered it straight away when re-booted.  This happened 3 days in a row.

On the Internet setup page in the router interface, Internet IP address is now set to "Get dynamically from ISP"

Today, the WAN IP changed again but instead of an orange light showing on the front panel to confirm the dropped connection, the DSL light remained white but there was no connectivity from any device on the LAN and no WAN available.  The router didn't respond to 192.168.1.1 and Netgear Genie failed to connect reporting: "NETGEAR router is not found or is not supported. Also make sure the device is not connected to the guest network of the router and no IPv6 is enabled".  At the same time the router was evidently able to perform its usual LAN functions because internal devices on the LAN were able to communicate with each other.

This problem was solved by manually rebooting, i.e. switching off the unit with the power button and re-starting.  Once up again, normal service was resumed, the unit was able to receive connection by Genie and 192.168.1.1

I have a QNAP NAS, which relies on its own software to communicate with QNAP's DDNS facility to cope with the ever-changing WAN IP.  Other than the static route for this which is set up in the D7800, there should be no interaction from the NAS that upsets the router. There are no other tricky connections such as VoIP phones, just simple DHCP LAN connections including switches and a couple of access points

What is going wrong?  Any help appreciated.

Ed

  • Problem seems to be solved:

    • backup configuration file
    • factory reset
    • reconnect using setup wizard

WAN IP changed overnight but DSL connection did not drop. Fingers crossed that wasn't a fluke.

OMG! I have had this exact same problem on my D7800 modem-router running firmware v1.0.1.56 on Plusnet  VDSL 2 in the UK for the past few months.

Randomly at between around 2 to 3am in the morning the amber internet light would come on, the connection dropped but the D7800 would not reconnect / bind / sync itself to the fibre broadband connection, even though there was an active connection. Always between 2-3am. Sometimes at 11pm, other times at around 1am. in a 10 day period I had eight drops (one a day).

All I have done is added a static IP address from my ISP (Plusnet.) Plusnet has even given me a fresh static IP address and that hasn't helped. Also, BT Openreach has installed two new phone sockets, re-wired both sockets with fresh cable back to the street, replaced the pair of 'legs' on the box in the street - yet still the random drops.

I am using DNS Servers 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 from Cloudflare.

My Router MAC Address was set to 'Use This MAC Address' - I have now changed it to 'Use Default Address' under 'Internet Setup'.

This morning (16th September) I have seen there is a new firmware update (v1.0.1.58) which I have just upgraded to.

Does this sound familliar to you? What else did you do to solve this problem?

A factory reset resolved the problem. No more drops.
