Do all routers eventually just start to die (nighthawk R7000)? (Need a replacement)

Right now running a Netgear R7000 running DD-WRT. Ive been experiencing a lot of issues lately and have to reboot often. This happened to my last router a few years back as well.

Do all routers eventually start to "crap" out?

Im guessing this is pretty outdated as well - so might as well upgrade to something better. I'm not so sure I need DDWRT anymore, since the majority of the time im not home, im connected to all sorts of wifi (and use a vpn), so I guess I really dont care if I have it anymore.

Budget is around 200 - range has been fine on this, but wouldnt mind a little boost. I know new wifi standards have been released since then, so an update would be nice.

I do a lot of gaming (mostly LAN, but I have friends come over and use wifi), so any extra GAMING features i guess would be cool, but im assuming they all probably offer the same thing, just some get their prices jacked up for GAMING purposes.

  • To answer your first question, regardless of what direction you go for new; yes routers eventually crap out.  Power surges and line spikes take a toll and the effect is cumulative.  One of the best upgrades you can make is to put your modem and router downstream of a small uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

Not in my experience. I usually end up retiring devices because newer ones offer features that I'd like to have.

"Issues" could mean anything, but the R7000 was always a basic "workhorse" router.

Netgear's gaming routers do not "offer the same thing". They come with a fancy dumaOS operating system of their own that adds all manner of bells and whistles. At a price! Only you know if they would make sense for you.

Heat on electronics can also be a cause of routers to give up the ghost.

Why I run a laptop cooler fan under any router I have online 24/7.
