Firmware update using app
I got an email saying there is a firmware update, and to download an app to do the update. When I start the app, I get a message saying it is connecting, then "this router is not supported".
Does this mean there is not actually an update available for my model, or is there a different way to do the update?

I'd manually update it over a hardwired connection. Reason I say this is when we do see corrupt firmware issues, it tends to be when people updated via the app or over wireless.

Those messages are often little more than marketing stuff.
Netgear has your details in its mailing list. From time to time it blasts the ;list with these messages. In reality they may have nothing to do with a recent firmware update. It just knows that some time in the distant past they pushed something out for the EX7000.
As plemans says, the best response in those circumstances is to visit the support pages for your box. If there is new firmware there, which may or may not be the case, do the manual update. Follow that link.
