How can I activate the wifi ac1600 with the Nighthawk app?

We are having difficulity getting our Netgear wifi 5 AC1600 Router set up.  First of all, there are not enough instructions to get the router up and running.  Do we start with the Nighthawk app?  Isn't there a free app we can use?  There was not a cord to connect the router to the computer.  Where do we get one?  Any and all information is welcomed.  Thank you!  Ginny

    what actual model do you have? AC1600 is a speed, not a model. 

    And the setup could be different if you have a modem/router combo device verses just a router. 

    There's a support site with access to manuals, firmware, install guides for installing with more than 1 route. 
    Go to https://www.netgear.com/support/
    Type in your model number and from there it'll take you to the above.
    Its a great resource to start with.
