Internet connected / Time synchronized every 6hrs drops connections

Greetings to one and all,

Been happening for months now, I can time it to the second as to when my IPTV locks up lol I've checked logs and seen that I had an intruder through the Upnp (so disabled) figuring that was causing my internet reset/dropping wifi etc. After seeing a couple DDOS attacks the intruder used as retailiation for not having entry, I cleared the logs and hoped that was the end of the problem but even with no more intruders but now i'm seeing the trigger/time of when my internet is dropping momentarily and causing havok with my IPTV etc.

- I've called my isp, had them check the line, no problem between them and my modem... so, its something in the router that might need tweaking/changing that could have been reset since updating firmware possibly?

Here is my logs everytime this happened, my dhcp would reissue ip addresses too (I've removed the DHCP/cleaned them up for easy viewing), :

- I have an R8000 X6 AC3200 with Firmware Version V1.0.4.28_10.1.54
- I've reserved ALL my devices attached/wireless ip so no dhcp should be triggered any further in logs.
I've love any advice cause i've searched the forums and internet and other than "hard reset", not sure if there is something else I can do?

Thank you in advance,
Sith

IP address renewal happens all the time on networks. A renewal of IP address of the WAN interface on the router should not cause a pause in the IPTV. I would look at the router and specifically the router firmware. It might be worth the effort to go to an older version of the firmware. Do you know of a version that seemed to work for you? If so I would reinstall that. You could try a hard reset, but not really sure what that would accomplish in this case, but who knows?

  • Well, those lines are NOT drops.

    My R8000 log is similar:

[Time synchronized with NTP server] Tuesday, May 21,2019 16:19:22
[Internet connected] IP address: 97.xxx.xxx.xxx. Tuesday, May 21,2019 16:19:21

Leases are set by the backend of your ISP's configuration for your IP Address. Totally OUT of your control.

If you look at the ADVANCED tab, and click on CONNECTION STATUS, you'll see the LEASE time, mine:

    Lease Obtained 0 days,20 Hours,29 Minutes
    Lease Expires 0 days,6 Hours,5 Minutes

My time now is 6:45AM on the 22nd.

Do the math, lease gotten yesterday @ 4:19 in the afternoon. This is roughly 8 hours yesterday and 6+ today, which matches roughly the 20 hours and 29 minutes since it was obtained. 6+ hours to go before it will try again.

That said, it usually IS normal for a least to be attempted to be renewed at 1/2 the time! It is NOT happening for me.

My ISP (Spectrum) it appears as rumors persist is transitioning to faster base service and seriously upgrading the backbone for GB speeds as well. So recently my IP Address changed. Before I was having a VERY short lease and at 1/2 the lease time it was getting renewed:

[Time synchronized with NTP server] Sunday, Feb 17,2019 03:33:30
[Internet connected] IP address: 67.xxx.xxx.xxx, Sunday, Feb 17,2019 03:33:29
[Time synchronized with NTP server] Sunday, Feb 17,2019 02:07:35
[Internet connected] IP address: 67.xxx.xxx.xxx, Sunday, Feb 17,2019 02:07:10

All this is out of your control.

As for logging, especially for attacks, I think NG logging just sucks, period. If you Google the attack type you had almost ALL results that mention a router will be NETGEAR!!! I'd say at least 99% of them are FALSE POSITIVES. Google the IP Address and most of the time you'll see that they are related to sites you visited or connected to something that is active on a device.

I think it is poor handling by the CPU of the router. Basically, usually under load (a lot of active Internet connections) it loses track of what LAN IP address was expecting a TCP/IP packet. When one comes in that it wasn't expecting, it thinks it is an attack and logs it as one depending what is in it. You would not even notice this usually. The device waiting for a packet realizes it didn't get one in a very short period of time and requests it again which the router now 'remembers' and it comes in very fast. Device is happy and continues. Might see a second pause or so in a video, a web page load, or never notice it.

I have seen spurious devices trying to attach with UPnP on myself, but it wasn't an attack.

      Thank you for the reply,

      Lease Obtained 0 days,12 Hours,0 Minutes
      Lease Expires 0 days,6 Hours,59 Minutes

okay, i understand the lease renewal at half time, that fits what's happening here but my problem still exists that at every 6hr interval my iptv will freeze on my 5G (high end android boxes) and its annoying as heck! I was hoping for an uninterupted experience, is there anyway to fix this so it doesnt interupt my IPTV? I mean a router shouldn't freeze devices while doing an ip renewal.

If only IPTV freezes, and no other devices, then the problem is probably with IPTV.

This appears to be a common problem when I Google'd "iptv will freeze"? Might want to look at some of those.

There is a difference also between freezing and buffering. First one mean it completely stops and doesn't change, the other it stops and then starts again. Those are two different problems. Freezing is locking up and you have to reboot or restart, the other pauses and then jumps ahead and usually indicates either slow internet that can't fill up the buffer and then starts when new frames come in until it happens again.

Possible QoS could help here IF Internet speed is slow, or hurt if Internet speed is 2-300Mbps or higher.
