Netgear router, 5 GHz can not be selected to Auto. Have a potential solution. Any thoughts?

Hello guys, I currently have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000, which is an excellent router and I really enjoy it. However, something I noticed is that the 5GHz can not be selected to an Auto channel, so one day my wireless signal will be clear (I live in a crowded area), and then sporadically I get packet loss, and slow downs. My current idea is to use my old ASUS N66U, hook into my router as an AP, because oddly the ASUS firmware lets 5GHz change channel automatically, but my Netgear can't. Does this sound ideal? My N66U is only 802.11n capable, but I'm ok with that, since I'd still have my Netgear broadcast an AC capable SSID. I'd have the Asus AP broadcast it's own 5GHz signal. Thoughts?

5Ghz has never had the Auto option. Not a 5Ghz spec so just pick something or pick a channel thats not busy with neighboring wifi signals. If your in a congested area, try and reduce the transmit power on the router from 100% to 50% or lower if the router has this feature.
