NOTE: Use a wired PC and web browser to update router FW. If continued problems are seen after a FW update, it's recommended to try a factory reset and setup from scratch with out loading any saved configurations from backup files.

I'm already running firmware 1.0.5.88 which is the latest but the download link I received from Netgear had me download V1.0.12.106 which looks like it's intended for an R7000. Should I try to install the firmware suggested to me by Netgear even though it says it's for an R7000?

v.88 is most current for the R8000. Had you had a R7000 any any point in history?
No. Here's a copy of part of the email I received:
Hi Ross,
NETGEAR strongly recommends that you update to the latest firmware version for your R8000 as soon as possible.
A Firmware update was released on Oct. 15, 2024, that addresses security vulnerabilities, however your R8000 has not been automatically updated and is running a firmware version earlier than 1.0.5.88.
