New R7350 Nighthawk downloading massive amounts of data

I recently purchased a NEW R7350 nighthawk router and installed it last month.  I am now seeing 4x the data usage, which as I search the internet seems to not be a new problem.  Netgear has no way to isolate data usage to device, so I have reset network name and SSID, taken everything except laptops off of the network, and I am still seeing 100GB/day of downloaded data.  This used to be 25'ish GB/day with all of my devices.  The only change is the new router last month.  I have installed traffic meter, which only looks at the total consumption vs. at the device level, which is inline with what the ISP reports.  Is there some service on the routers that by default downloads data for some reason?  Something else I should be checking?

  • does it happen on your other devices?

I know there was some issues with firesticks when they first come out downloading to much screensavers/wallpaper and burning through data.

Try your other devices to see if its just an issue on that firestick.

    Are you streaming video?

Several streaming sites will dynamically change the streaming quality based off the connection you have. If suddenly you have a better connection, it might have bumped your streaming quality from 720 to 1080p or even 4K.

What you can do is if you're using 100gig, shut off half your device. See if you still use that much data. If you do, then you know its in your devices that are on and you can continue to follow that option until you get to the device using all the data.

Another thing is if you're using windows 10/11 devices, theres a data usage monitor that'll tell you how much data you've used. I've used that before when one of my pc's was infected and chewed through 600gig in 2-3 days.

thanks.  I do stream, however, I literally have 1 PC connected to the router at this time.  I have also disabled auto firmware update.  Going to add streaming devices back if this remedies my issue 1 by 1.

Sadly, adding 1 device at a time and tracking usage is about all you can do to find it.
