[Nighthawk R6700v3] Slower bandwidth than when directly connected on the "bridge" router

Hello,

I have a router as bridge and then my Nighthawk router. When I directly plug my computer on the first router (and remove the bridge configuration), I get the 400 mbit/s as advertised by my ISP.

When I configure the first router as bridge and let my Nighthawk router handles the network (DHCP, ...), and then plug my computer cable on the nighthawk, I only get 200 mbit/s. Upload speed (20mbit/s, yeah it is bad, I know) stays the same between both tests.

This came after an update I guess because the first time I set it up, I didn't have that issue and could get around 400 mbit/s via cable and around 350 mbit/s via WiFi provided by the Nighthawk router.

Do you have any idea on the configuration I should check in my Nighthawk config? On the first router in bridge mode, I also disable the WiFi and I have nothing enabled, just the forward of the internet connection to the Nighthawk router but I could also check some config there if needed.

I don't have the firmware version for the moment, I can edit this post when I am home but I should be on the latest version.

Thanks!

  • 2 things to try.

    1. I've seen to many devices not run properly in bridge mode. Leave the ISP's device in router mode and disable its wifi. Then either just run the netgear as is (it'll be in a double nat) or put it in access point mode (fixes the double nat). Then try it.

    2. there's been a few reports of slow downs on that firmware. You can try downgrading the firmware a version or 2 (factory reset after changing firmwares)

    So we need better description/diagram.

    1. what is the other router?

lay it out exactly how it is. For example, if you read my signature in my posts, it goes over how I have my network setup. Use something like that and not "on the first router".  Be specific. Say My tplink **** is the primary router. I have the **** setup as a wireless bridge.

Is it actually setup as wireless bridge or in access point mode? Different manufacturer's mean different things by bridge. Some mean a wireless bridge where it doesn't rebroadcast, some mean its a wireless extender, some use bridge for access point mode. So be specific with the setup and how you are actually configuring it.

      Hi, thanks for the help.

My ISP in Belgium is VOO and I have this routeur "Technicolor TC7210.V" (found here in French https://assistance.voo.be/fr/support/internet/installation-et-activation/trouver-le-modele-de-votre-modem-voo.html)

In this router web interface, if I select the bridge mode (other mode are IPv4, IPv6 or both IPv4/IPv6), I can't configure anything else other than the WiFi which is currently disabled for 2.4GHz and 5GHz since it is managed by my NightHawk.

So basically, I have done the following test.

No bridge, direct access to ISP router, Nighthawk powered off

      Technicolor TC7210.V (IPv4 mode, disabled wifi) -> Netgear Switch GS308v3 -> Desktop computer via RJ45 => 400 Mbit/s down, 20 Mbit/s up

Bridge mode, going through Nighthawk R6700v3

Technicolor TC7210.V (Bridge, disabled wifi) -> Nighthawk R6700v3 -> Netgear Switch GS308v3 (enabled wifi in 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, DHCP server on, DNS via pihole plugged on the switch but I also tried with direct DNS 1.1.1.1 from computer) -> Desktop computer via RJ45 => ~200 Mbit/s down, 20Mbit/s up

The firmware version of the R6700v3 is V1.0.4.128_10.0.104. The second setup (with the technicolor in bridge mode) worked before with speed of 400Mbit/s but some config changed during an update maybe and then I got this halved download speed issue.

Would you have any idea on the config I should have a look at in the Netgear R6700v3 interface?

      Thanks a lot.
