Nighthawk X10 AD7200 configuring with Asus DSL-N16 Wireless-N300 as Modem

Hi,

I'm quite new to setting up modems and routers.
I was provided an Asus DSL-N16 router/modem by my ISP.

I bought the Nighthawk X10 AD7200 to use as a router.

I let the Nighthawk app do all the configuring but I feel like maybe there are some ways to help with a more stable connection. It just doesn't feel like it is as quick as it could be.

The only real changes I've made to the routers are setting up on the Asus modem a dns server to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1.

The Nighthawk is set to receive DNS automatically from ISP. I wasn't sure if this would use the Asus modems DNS (which I wanted) or override back to ISP settings.

Also I'm not sure if it's possible to use the Asus modem for as little as possible as I'm guessing the more the Nighthawk handles the quicker everything will be?

I also have Plex installed on my laptop, and when trying to setup remote access it says I have "Double-NAT". I tried to fix this by trying some bits, and manually setting a port, but this failed, so I reverted what I changed.

Hope this is the correct place to post this!

Thanks for any help!

Luke

  • Awesome thank you for confirming Antinode.

I guess I will need to decide what's best, as setting my Nighthawk to repeater mode kind of made me feel like I was wasting its potential a bit, hopefully I can find a way to put the Asus to modem only, then I can pay for the fixed IP to get rid of double NAT. I still need to set up an always on Plex server anyway, so I still have much to do.

Thank you all for your time helping with this!

Reason your having issues with your Plex and potentially your other issues is because of that double nat.

You're running the asus in router mode and the netgear.

    You're 2 easiest options?

    1. Disable the routing portion of the Asus. Place it in modem only mode. I'd contact Asus for help setting that up as they're the experts with their device. (or your isp). This'll let let the netgear run as the only router.

    Or

    2. Place the netgear in AP (access point) mode. this disables its own routing functions but still lets its wireless and ethernet ports to work. You can potentially also turn off the wireless on the Asus if you do this. its not needed and if you don't do so, make sure to seperate out the wireless channels so they aren't interfering with each other.

Thank you so much for the information!

I've just been chatting to my ISP Support. Their advice was as follows:

Have you purchased a static I.P. with our services?

That'll likely be why, at default our services use dynamic I.P to get to you and are split at the LNS server that's where the double NAT comes from. Static I.Ps are £1.49 in addition per month it will resolve the issue and also allow port forwarding.

Would this be what caused the double NAT?

To be honest it didn't sound like they knew much.
