Nighthawk X4S R7800 too slow to handle Centurylink 1GB Fibre connection?

As the highest rated router on smallnetbuilder, I had very high hopes.  The wifi coverage is great, but this router appears incapable of handling Centurylink's gigabit fibre service.  It would seem that in reality this device is an access point when forced into a PPPoe connection scenario.  I recently upgraded my internet to gigabit fibre, and decided to also upgrade my previous netgear router in the process.  The goal was of course maximum speed and throughput with vast wifi coverage.  Wifi - big check mark.  Speed and throughput - nothing but a blank space.

Can this router truly handle a fibre internet connection through centurylink, who regretably uses a GPON PPPoe connection?

The "stock" centurylink setup involves a Colix 716GE-I ONT (optical network termination) coupled with a ZyXEL C2100Z router (which Centurylink incorrectly calls a modem).  It didn't seem possible to me that the ZyXEL (which is admittedly poor at transmitting WiFi) could possibly leave the netgear in the dust - but honestly its not even close unless I have something seriously misconfigured.

  • A little clarrification on the graphic...  Its just a screen shot of dslreports showing recent test history.  Speeds from 904 Mbps  in the chart through 1010 are the ZyXEL rental equipment provided by Centurylink.  Speeds 581 through 581 at the far right are my "upgraded" R7800 option which apparently saves me $10 a month at the cost of losing 300 Mbps per month.

Tests were done on a windows desktop with 16 gigs of ram and an Intel i7 over gigabit ethernet.  I am really hoping someone tells me I'm an idiot and set something up wrong here - otherwise this router just can't hang.
