Port Forwarding stopped working with wired cameras after update

I have been using my Nighthawk r8000 successfully for years with my Bosch wired security system and wired cameras, with an xfinity router/modem in bridge mode and a dynamic dns (no-ip).  After a router firmware update (V1.0.4.12_10.1.46), the port forwarding does not work for these wired devices. I am on Windows 10.

I confirmed that I correctly entered the devices via port forwarding (they are visible when I look at attached devices) and double checked dynamic dns settings. Canyouseeme.org says "I could not see your service on ...." even after I checked "Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection."  I completed address reservations for the devices thinking this might be the issue. I have tried enabling and disabling UpNp. I have restarted the router.  I have tried to get my non-network-saavy brain around this issue with a number of other methods, to no avail. There is no good documentation available and it is ridiculous to pay the fee they want for support on this device.

Questions: Should the "service setting" be FTP for these devices in the port forwarding screen? Do I have to go into the screens for Security, Block Services and list these devices as never being blocked?  If so, I have no clue of the "service type" I need to enter into the dropdown.  Or is there something else entirely that I am missing???

Thanks in advance for ANY help you might offer.

  • Well, after avoiding my problem for a few weeks, I finally sat down with the plan to commit hours to figuring out the problem.  Happily, it only took me about a half hour.  I started going through every page of the settings.  I found that somehow, on the Advanced/Security/Schedule page, the boxes for "Days to Block - Every Day" and "Time of Day to Block -- All Day" were both checked.  All the other settings (Allow new devices on Access Control, Never on Block Sites and Never on Block Services) were fine but this schedule thing caused the hang up.

So, now I can set the Security system both from the panel and from my phone.  I can also see the cameras, except for the one in the basement where my teenager taped a notecard over the lens.  (Guess which camera I'm going to be watching the most.....)

    Thank you!!!

Does reverting to older firmware solve the problem?  Netgear firmware
    bugs are not particularly uncommon.

It should not be so, but, in some cases, a Netgear firmware update
may require resetting the router back to its default settings, and
(manually) reconfiguring it.  You can try saving and restoring settings
across firmware versions, but that's not sure to work, so you may end up
    manually reconfiguring, any way.

If you can't blame the new firmware, then...

I'm glad that you're happy about these settings, but I can't see any
of them from here, and your being happy proves little to me.

I use port forwarding rather than UPnP, but if this stuff had been
working, then you should not need to make changes like this.

Probably not.  Are you using FTP to talk to these cameras?  Between a
hardware description like "my Bosch wired security system and wired
cameras", and a port-forwarding description like "correctly entered",
it's hard to provide any specific advice.  My experience with IP cameras
is limited, but mine use a web-browser interface.  (They may use FTP to
upload data, but that would be as an FTP client, so nothing for you to
worrry about, and that's not how you interact with them.)

If you're talking about something like ADVANCED > Security > Block
Services, then that's for outgoing connections, not incoming.

How do you normally interact with these cameras?  Web browser?  Can
you (still?) do it from within your LAN using the camera's LAN IP
address?  Can you (still?) do it from within your LAN using the router's
WAN IP address (your public IP address)?  Which port(s) do these cameras
    use?

       Copy+paste your port-forwarding rules.  Copy+paste your address
    reservations.
