R7000 and R8000 Drops, Loss, Jitter, and all of the above.
I have been through hell and back with these routers. I started off flashing DD WRT after having issues with dropped packets or slow connection especially after being connected overnight. Everything w...
- Apr 09, 2022New modem and the line was checked and everything was working normally. I’ve figured out what the cause of the issues is. 1. The loss is caused by interference on my 5G Wi-Fi, due to netgear not having automatic channels for 5G I have to constantly switch it myself. 2. The bad speed and loss after being connected overnight is 100 percent a software issue and has been resolved by a hard reset but will come back like it always has. My conclusion is what was said before, avoid netgear equipment unless it’s newer models but after this experience I don’t want to deal with anything netgear ever again. The only thing that’s consistent with netgear is how every support person is persistently blaming the ISP or modem, I suppose the easiest route is to blame the other person.

Most mesh systems are too expensive for me and some don’t even have 4 lan ports it’s ridiculous. Also my frustration levels rise to a new high when companies remove features and settings and a third party is able to do it no problem.

3rd party is doing it without loss because they can restrict speeds so its not stressing the cpu and in some cases even overclock the cpu. Stock firmware doesn't allow that.
Got an old computer sitting around you could try pfsense on?
- BillClinternetApr 04, 2022ApprenticePfsense sounds like a good option in the future. If third party firmware had some kind of driver to use hardware acceleration it would easily beat netgears firmware.
- BillClinternetApr 04, 2022ApprenticeWell I have good news. I tried flashing my r7000 with dd wrt instead of advanced tomato because I’m not broadcasting on the router anyways. I’ve ran a ton of tests and only one had .36 percent loss. Also I’m get 450 down regularly which is 50 more than my plan. Very strange, I never even reset the other 2 access points.

the devices in access point mode shouldn't need a reset as access point mode disables any packet/traffic management/inspection.
so if the ddwrt router performs at full speed, everything else should work fine. Its why a pfsense box or edge routerx would be a decent bet for you as then all the routers could be in access point mode
- BillClinternetApr 04, 2022ApprenticeYeah but netgear nighthawk routers are notorious for having to be reset because they randomly start acting up regardless of what mode. That’s why I loved custom firmware it was consistently reliable.y issues aren’t completely fixed btw I kept my phone connected and tried in the morning and I’m right back to where I started.
