R7000 as AP, setup question
I'm zeroing in on the R7000 for my home network. Lots to learn since I haven't had a need for my own router for a few years and lots has changed. Anyway, I'm getting new Xfinity service with their pr...

The link you provided above has you covered pretty well.
As far as setup goes when you pull it out of the box.. you can tie it into your cable modem if you like, just when you hook the other end up to your r7000 do not plug into the WAN port use ports 1-4..... Then follow the link you provided...
Or you can hook your computer directly up to the r7000 and give it a static ip to match the 192.168.xxx.xxx LAN. Then configure it that way then tie it into your network...
Overall it is pretty simple and quick to do...

Thanks. I thought there was a way to do it with the cable modem plugging into the WAN port, but that also might have been the LinkSys router that I was considering for a while :-). This does look pretty straightforward, and I can always go back into the settings and make some tweaks to the default settings.

What do you mean by "port 4?" Are you talking about the Ethernet port #, and why would that matter? Or did you mean "channel 4?"- elcondorNov 06, 2017Aspirant
Ethernet port #4 on the Xfinity Arris cable Modem, per their tech support.Don't exactly know why #4 but has worked like a charm thru all the firmware updates. BTW, you cannot access the router to do the upgrades directly unless you swap cables since the computer sees the cable modem/router not the R7000. I upgrade wirelessly thru my laptop.
