R7000 with VPN

I have a property in Europe and to watch UK TV whuke there I have set up my R7000 as a second router with Express VPN for routers on it. It works but I do not understand why the download speed for my initial router is 720mbps yet what is coming out of my R7000 is only 29mbps. I have cat 8 ethernet cables between the 2 routers & my TV. Have I set it up wrong?

    Second router?

Two routers on your network can cause headaches. For example, you can end up with local problems with address on your network. Among other things, the other router can misdirect addresses that the Netgear router usually handles, such as routerlogin.net or the usual default IP address for a router, 192.168.1.1.

This explains some of the other drawbacks.

Unless you have specific reasons for using two routers – to create two separate networks for example – it is often easier to use just one router and then to set up the second router as a wifi access point (AP) with a wired connection to the main router. Netgear advises this, as does just about every site you will visit.

But that has its own drawbacks:

I suspect that trying to run a VPN on a second router won't work.

      Thanks michaelkenward

The second router 'thing' actually does work & has been working for a while. The mbps speed between the 2 is the issue.

Unfortunately I have no choice but to go down the 2 router road.

It is the only way to get a VPN on your router in Europe as the internet provider gives you a router (that you can't put a VPN on) that you have to use or your internet won't work - (have tried it) - so you have to get a 2nd that will take a VPN. There are lots of people doing it now.

My question & what I can't understand is why the big drop in mbps between the 2? Why does the Netgear router not put out the same mbps as it receives, or at least somewhere near?

Two routers wired together can work, I currently have a similar setup, but that usually required the second one to give itself an IP address that does not clash with the main router.

You are using the R7000 in a strange mode, which may or may not explain your observations. You'll need a genuine expert to step in and help. But the general response is likely to be that "double NAT" is a bad idea.

Getting VPN to work is another challenge. I'm not familiar with ExpressVPN.

        Did you try this?

My ISP tries the same move. Fortunately, I am still free to use my own modem. I can also use a modem/router in bridge (modem only) mode, although my ISP provides kit that won't allow that.

You don't say what your second router is.
