R7000P Dropping Wired Connection

Greetings,

Recently my R7000P has been dropping it's hard wired connection to my cable modem.  The wifi LEDs remain white, the connection LED goes orange. It requires power cycling the router to bring it back.  Is there any information in the logs that might be helpful in diagnosing this?  Is there a fix?

Model R7000P

Firmware v1.3.1.64_10.1.36

Windows 10

Thanks!

  • Maybe I missed it in this long thread.

Has the Ethernet cable every  been replaced? Bad Ethernet cable end can cause issues like is described.

    What modem is it?

When the connection drops, are you still able to access the router?

And when the connection drops, can you ping/access the modem?

The modem is Arris Surfboard SBG8300.  I'm not sure I can answer the follow up questions but maybe this will help:

When the connection drops, are you still able to access the router?

I open the Genie app and click the 'Fix Internet' button.  I happen to view the details this time but didn't think to copy them out.  Here is my best recollection of what happened.

      • Disabled ethernet adapter on PC
      • Re-enabled it
      • DHCP failed
      • Gave some some sort of message that made me think it might be the ethernet adapter, not sure why that would be an issue to the router dropping the connection
      • Software said it couldn't fix it
      • Power cycled router - issue resolved.

And when the connection drops, can you ping/access the modem?

Yes, I have a Roku device plugged into the modem directly and my IoT devices on the wifi network from the modem.  If I log into that network, there is still a connection to modem and everything works.

Another piece of information:  sometimes the ethernet connection light does not turn orange/amber when the connection is dropped.  All lights will display white but have no connection (wifi or ethernet).

Hope this progress the conversation along. Thanks!

        The SBG8300 isn't just a modem. Its a modem/router combo device.

It can put you in a double nat situation.

        Options?

        1. put the SBG8300 in modem only mode. It disables its wifi and routing functions.

        2. put the netgear in access point mode. it leaves the arris in control of the routing functions and lets you have both (arris and netgear) as wifi and as ethernet options.

        3. put the netgears IP address in the arris's DMZ.

When the netgear drops, the arris still works fine from the sound of it.
