Is this a new router or something you just drug out of a closet? (because its fairly old)
What firmware version is on it?

It was given to us because they never installed it. So, yes it is an older router but this is the first time it has been used. I ended up just starting over and reinstalling it and so far so good. I'm just wondering if every time it is disconnected am I going to have to start from scratch to install it? All prior routers came back up with no issues. I am able to update it through the app.

You may want to get FW update on the router.

I'm supposed to be able to do that through the app but when I check for updates I get an error message saying "There was a problem checking the firmware". But it shows I am connected to the router so any suggestions as to why this is happening and is there another way to update it? I know just enough about electronics to do what I need to but am by no means a professional at it. Thanks
