R8000 Readyshare DLNA Media Server

I see there are some older posts about the removal of DLNA, but I am posting to request that Netgear bring it back. I recently upgraded my router from a WNDR3700 to a R8000 and a big reason I stayed with Netgear was the media server. Having to use the SMB protocol I believe is the reason my hard drive attached to the router via usb keep spinning down after a few minutes of inactivity. I am concerned with the longevity of my drive with this chronic spinning up and down all day long. There is no Windows10 setting for power management of a mapped network drive and since my old router didn't do this, it seems it's happening because of SMB use.

With so many firmware updates since this change I am not comfortable with downgrading and I should not have to sacrifice my security, bug fixes and performance to get a feature back that was present when I purchased the new router.

Netgear, if you're listening.... bring DLNA back.

  • I finally saw the firmware release notes that alert customers that this router no longer suppot DLNA, among other stuff. This is too bad and I am wondering, aside from rolling back to earlier firmware (which version would this be?), what other means do I have to share media to my gaming consoles and TVs. Any information would be appreciated.

My last contact with Netgear technical assistance suggested that re-instating this facility is not on the roadmap for this product.

    Too bad.
