Router Firmware Update

I just upgraded my router to the latest firmware and when it was completed, it disconnected me from all devices (12) that is was previously connected to. I went into the router settings (routerlogin.net) to see what the issue was and found the firmware had literally changed the router name and password back to the factory settings. Is this normal and can I expect this to happen every time I update the firmware ? This was a major pain in the butt given my wife and I are working from home these days, and without an internet connection, we can't do our jobs. Is there anyway around this short of not performing the update ? Fortunately for me, I was smart enough to save the setting to a config file and was able to use it to reestablish the previous settings and get my internet back. It just seems to me the company should know people are going to change the router names/passwords and leave those areas alone when they do these updates. maybe I'm a little too braindead in that area, but does everyone else experience the same BS when they do these firmware updates ?

Usually an update doesn't trigger a factory reset. Not sure why it did in your case.

Maybe you were far enough behind the changes triggered it?

Thanks for the quick reply, plemans. I thought I had the router set up to perform automatic firmware updates as they come out. Or is that not an option for these ? The way I found out there was an update this morning was when my internet wouldn't connect and during the troubleshooting, I found out. Is there a better way to ensure I don't have any further factory resets ?

Most of them should get auto-updates but they only "force" the critical updates in my experience.

I prefer to do it manually anyway as when we see corrupt firmware issues, it tends to be either from the auto-updates, updates over the app, or when done over wifi.

If you've already got a backup configuration, that's half the battle.
