Strange behaviour R7000
Hi,
Im using a R7000 with firmaware V1.0.9.60_10.2.60 and for a long time it was the heart of my network. Recnetly I recieved a new modem/router of Ziggo and as it also has dual band Wifi and e...

Hi, finaly i made it back and sorry I didnt reply yet, losts of snow out here.
I followed all your steps and at some point Im confused. I wait your responce and hope I did it right this time?
- Remove R7000 from your network
- done
- Turn it on
- done
- Wait for all the lights to settle down
- done
- Optional step factory reset R7000
- done
- Connect PC to LAN port on R7000 and nothing else (it might help to disable wifi)
- Done. Connected my pc to LAN port 1 (Default Wifi not disable atm)
- Go to 192.168.1.1
- done
- After factory reset the setup wizard may kick in here, you'll just have to persevere through those daft questions
- done
- When the browser interface comes up
- Advanced
- Advanced Setup
- Router / AP / Bridge mode
- I am confused here cause selecting Repeater modes gives me a new screen with an option like Wireless repeat function. Do I t start following the other link nowo or do I only click Apply?
- Follow the prompts and warnings
- Apply
- Wait for R7000 to reboot
- Plug R7000 LAN port into router LAN port

I have found the reason why it didn't work.......The WDS button was pressed down at the right side of it so was minda pressed all the time.
After fixing this the r7000 is responding to all my setting and changes.
I tried both repeater and AP mode.
After setting it to repeater mode (according the netgear manual) I weasnt able to reach it anymore via LAN. In the Ziggo router I could see the IPadres of the nighthawk, very odd.
In AP mode I notice that its not bringing to the table waht I have hoped for. I matched SSID name and PWD of my Wifi and still its not switching to the "better" so when I go up to the first floor I see the Wifi connecting on my phone dropping but by bit till I have around 56Mbps left. (In the living roon thats over 800)
So only when I disable and enable my Wifi on my phone it will pick up the stronger signal when I m on the first floor.
Thansk for all the time and patience you put in to this. Still looking for a good way to solve this.

When the router is in AP mode, various things change.
Disabled Features on the Router when set to AP Mode | Answer | NETGEAR Support
One thing is that the AP gets an IP address from the router on the network. So you need to track down the IP address of the AP. The router itself should be able tell you that.
If you feed that IP address into a browser, it should bring up the management graphical user interface.

As before, it is up to the wifi client to switch between wifi sources and to pick the best one.
Good wifi clients will see when they have moved from one good source to another.
You may be confusing things if you use the same SSID and password for the router and the AP. Same password yes, but same SSID may confuse the wifi clients.
I don't know how you are measuring 800 Mbps. It won't be your wifi.

> No I m not confusing anything, cuase it does work only issue is that my phone doenst switch to the better signal. He does it only when I swithc off/on the Wifi on the phone. At the moment Im done with it and know what to do as soon I do need better Wifi on the forst and second floor. I also can buy a wifi repeater directly form Ziggo biut for now no.

> Oh yes it is. My wifi peak is around 863Mbps with the R7000 when it was the heart of my wifi and streaming to my TV.
Ziggo roputer only peaks around 700Mbps. Both on the 5Ghz ofc.
As I said before, thanks for your patience and time.

Some I suspect are confusing CONNECTION SPEED with THROUGHPUT SPEED. For instance, I have 100Mbps service, over provisioned by the ISP to 115+/-Mbps. I have an AC Speed network adapter. It reports a connection speed of 866Mbps to my router's 5Ghz network. However any Internet Speed test will only show 115Mbps speed.
If one has 1Gps Internet speed that is usually 940Mbps. Possible to get that wired in a connection from PC to router. Wifi, probably not, but theoretically you could reach the connection speed, although true speed would have some real overhead that would reduce that.

The fastest credible wifi speeds I have seen reported here are around 600 Mbps, but that is for the latest devices, usually iStuff.
I have never seen anything like that sort of speed reported for smart TVs, most of which are, by design, limited to technology that simply can't go that fast, with 100 Mbps LAN and 2.4 GHz wifi.

Exactly, most N Speed devices will get around 250Mbps or so, on either band, 2.4 or 5Ghz. Max. connect can be up to 600Mbps, but that requires specific h/w as does a 450Mbs (both a network wireless adapter and router that supports that) but most are 300Mbps devices. There number of Antenea streams (and MIMO) used to transmit the SSID determines this (R8000 has 8 for instance),
Want faster, must use 5Ghz and AC speed devices. However, slower devices on the same band my reduce speed.
Some good reading:

https://www.lifewire.com/how-fast-is-a-wifi-network-816543 which details more about speeds. Note that the 13000Mbps (which I have on my R8000) has a 'real' speed of only 200Mbps.

The advertised WiFi router speed is (virtually) never reached by any WiFi client, regardless of band. Manufacturers love advertising big numbers (because it sells) but never tell you that you'll possibly never reach them. For example they ad a speed that can only be reached with 1024 QAM but no clients out there support it since it's an extension added by Broadcom and not part of the spec. There may be one or two WiFi cards that support it but the majority don't

Let me edit that for you:
"The advertised speed is never reached by anything, regardless of what you are doing."

Well, what I was trying to clear up was the differences in numbers that 'appear to be' speed. See the capture on right of my NG A6200 AC Speed USB adapter. 866Mbps... err, no, I only have 115Mbps coming in from the ISP. Even if I had 1Gbps (940Mbps) I'd NEVER even get close to that. Maybe on the new RAX8 or 12, but not on an R7000 or even an R8000.

I have 1GB lan and was talking about 5Ghz not 2.4Ghz.
The r7000 can go up to 1300Mbps
On my Samsung phone I have this connection speed with Ziggo router
On my Samsung phone I have this connection speed with R7000 AP:
With my Samsung TV its about the same connection speed. So I am only talking about the connection speed between the AP/router and my Phone (or TV)
Internet speed is different ofc and can be found here
I m stepping out any further "discussion" about this part of the topic.
