Trying to create a load-balanced WAN and connect to Netgear R8500

Here's what I have:

Working for years ...

  • Netgear cable modem connected to Comast
  • Netgear R8500 connected to cable modem
  • Subnet is 192.168.29

Recently installed

  • T-Mobile Internet Gateway
  • Subnet is 192.168.12
  • Working perfectly

Recently purchased

  • TP Link ER605 VPN Router
  • Subnet is 192.168.0

I want to connect the cable modem and T-Mobile Gateway to the ER605 and then the ER605 to R8500, creating a load-balancing pair from the two ports. I want to continue to use the Netgear as my wifi and the same address range (192.168.29), with the single WAN input coming from the ER605.

My first iterations didnt work, and I suspect its a combination of subnetting and R8500 configuration (i.e. must it be a bridge? an access point?)   I'm not a network tech, but I have an understanding of the concepts. Can anyone offer any advice?

  • Problem solved, my configuration was mostly correct. The problem was in testing and moving cables around I think things got squirilly with mac addresses. Rebooting the cable modem after connecting it to the ER605 solved that issue. Then I realized another issue was DNS, the netgear wifi router was now using the ER605 address as its DNS server. I changed DNS in the wifi router to Google's DNS and that part was working. I then attached my T-Mobile to the ER605 and have perfectly performing load balancing. So far at least.

To reiterate for anyone else trying this nonsense, I'm sure this will work with other devices and providers.

Cable Modem <-> ER605 WAN port

    T-Mobile Gateway <-> ER606 WAN/LAN1 port

ER605 LAN port <-> Netgear Wifi Router WAN port

    On the DR605:

    • WAN & WAN/LAN1 configured in WAN mode, Dynamic IP
    • LAN created with subnet 192.168.10 (just to eliminate using subnet 192.168.0)
    • Load Balancing is enabled
    • Application Optimized Routing enabled
    • Bandwidth Based Balancing disabled
    • Link Backup disabled
    • Online Detection configured automatic

On the Netgear Wifi Router, set DNS servers to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

    Working perfectly

I don't believe that will work. You don't have a "Load Balancing" supporting router. Most home class routers don't have this support. Mostly seen in enterprise environments. Best then would be to configure AP mode on the R8500 and connect it to the new VPN router that could connect to the ComCast modem.

Thanks, so connect both internet gateways (cable modem and t-mobile gateway) to the Tp-link and then tp-link to the R8500 set up as an access point? Does the ER605 (VPN router) subnet matter in this configuration?

Also, the ER605 does indeed support both bandwidth load balancing or link-down fail-over supposedly. I can't attest to it since I've not gotten that far.

      Thanks so much for responding.
