Wifi dropping

Our WiFi keeps dropping and is lagging in some parts of our small-ish house.  WOW told me to get a remote update to my privately owned modem/router combo.  How do I do that if I no longer have a warranty or get support?  Thanks for any help!

You can't, and the lack of "a warranty or [...] support" is not your
    problem.

I don't understand your reply:  "You can't, and the lack of "a warranty or [...] support" is not your problem."

           It's not complicated.

"How do I do that [...]?"

              "You can't."

You cannot manually update your NETGEAR cable modem or modem
              router's firmware.

NETGEAR provides your ISP with the latest firmware and your ISP
              updates your firmware.

Nothing to do with any warranty or support.  On a DOCSIS gizmo like
this, only the ISP can play with the firmware.
