Many Netgear routers have a "debug" option which will capture every packet on the WAN interface.

    i.e. open <IP of router>/debut.htm

I found that my Orbi router did not capture enough data to be useful, so my solution (Geek Alert) was to:

    • Place a 'managed' Ethernet switch between the router and ISP modem.
    • Connect the router WAN interface to Port 1 of the switch.
    • Connect the ISP modem to Port 2 ot the switch.
    • Mirror port 1 of the switch to Port 3 of the switch (for both "in" and "out")
    • Connect Port 3 of the switch to an Ethernet port on my PC
    • Open Wireshark on the PC to record everything that appeared on that Ethernet adapter.

One time, I wanted to document the DHCP behavior of my ISP over an entire week.  Realizing that this long of a data capture would be many gigabytes, I defined a Wireshark capture filter to record only DHCP (both v4 and v6).  After a week, it became clear that my ISP issued DHCP leases of one day for IPv4 and one week for IPv6.
