Is it better to power down when away/not in use for some time?
If planning to be away and not using WiFi for several days or more, is it a good idea to turn off the Nighthawk router?

Personally I don't. I have several things still running that use internet. My HVAC can be controlled remotely, my security system, etc.
It uses 2-4 kwh per week (depending on the model), so the power savings would be small.

And then, in my unqualified statistic, I've experienced much more devices - especially power supplies - not surviving the power-on load. Much more than have unexpectedly died on 24*7 operations.
Yeah, I've seen that too.

I'd agree. I've had more things fail during power on/off than any other time. For the minimal savings you'd get, I'd leave it.
