Nighthawk RS700 router, 2 Nighthawk AC8 Mesh Extenders, changed Network Map on app

A few months ago, I replaced my inadequate Nighthawk router with the RS700 and two mesh extenders, one wired and one not.  I had some difficulty with the replacement (even with NG help) so I watched my app pretty carefully for awhile.  My network map looked appropriate for my set up.  Yesterday everything changed on my map to just show the Internet and the RS700.  I spent a lot of time troubleshooting and rebooting and, while everything seems to be working, the network map is the same abbreviated version.
Should I be concerned about this?  The extenders show up elsewhere as something I can log into to control.  I don’t need to control them if they are doing their job.

Thanks for any advice you might offer.

Martha

You don't say what the Mesh extenders are, but you should be able to work with them "on line". You already said that you they show up on the network.

If that doesn't show the IP address, look at the list of "Attached Devices" listed in the main router. That should show the extenders and the IP addresses that the router has allocated to them. Then throw that into a browser and you should pull up the graphical user interface (GUI).

It’s a Zyxel VMG4927, which is no longer being manufactured.  There is a network available to me named Zyxel 23190, which must be related to the modem.

That could be where the problem lies. You have two routers. Your map is probably confused as to which is in charge. It may not see devices that are under the control of the other router.

Turning off the wifi of the modem/router will not fix the problem. (That is often just  a case of pressing a switch on the thing.) The thing is still working as a router. So you also need to disable the modem bit if you want the RS700 to be the main router.

Unfortunately, Google can't find a Zyxel VMG4927. Usually you could just google "[model number] bridge mode".

All I can find is this:

How to put my router in Bridge mode – Zyxel Support Campus EMEA

Another approach is to put the RS700 into access point mode. The manual for the router explains how to go about that:

    Visit the support pages:

    Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

    Or there is this:

How do I change my NETGEAR router to AP mode? | Answer | NETGEAR Support

    but then you hit this:

Disabled Features on the Router when set to AP Mode | Answer | NETGEAR Support

You'll have to work out if that blocks things that are important to you.

Where are you looking at this network map? On a mobile app? Which one?

Do you notice any difference in how things are performing on your network?

Then the usual boilerplate questions to eliminate some of the more common issues that crop up here.

What firmware version do you have on the device?

A number is more useful than "the latest". There may be newer versions, or "hot fixes", that do not show up if you check for new firmware with an app or in the browser interface.

If there is one it might also help if you told people the make and model number of the modem/gateway/ONT that connects this router to the Internet. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?

I ask because a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting.

Thank you, Michael.  I knew I would need more.  Here’s what I have.

I am using my iPad Pro (3rd gen) and the Netgear Nighthawk App V. 2.33.0.269.

The router is RS700 with firmware V1.07.82 which is up to date.  I don’t know what the firmware is in the mesh extenders because I would need to connect to them and it’s hard to find a time when there’s not someone using it.  I have checked the app for firmware updates when I installed them a month ago.

The modem may be an issue as there is a router behind it which I have no idea how to manage.  I will probably call my ISP on that part as it was provided by them very recently, when my older modem quit just after installing the router.  It’s a Zyxel VMG4927, which is no longer being manufactured.  There is a network available to me named Zyxel 23190, which must be related to the modem.  I know it should be disconnected (as I had to do that for my old modem) but everything is working as expected (except for the network map now) so that hasn’t been at the top of my list of things to do.  I should most likely address that somehow and then return here if it doesn’t solve my issue, unless you have the answer to disconnecting it.  The manual wasn’t particularly helpful for me.

Thanks again.  It may be obvious that I don’t use this site frequently as usually I don’t need to.
