RS200 speed slows to half after a day or two

I had an Asus router that was having a problem where I'd have to reboot it every week or it would start having up to 40% packet loss. Really weird and annoying, so I replaced it last week with an RS200 and was blown away by the wifi speeds I was getting. Every device in my home really liked working with the RS200 more than the old Asus.

For example, my Mac Mini M4 would only get around 350 Mbps download tops with the old router and is getting more like 850 Mbps down on the RS200.

However, after a day or two of operation, all my devices drop down to around 400-450 Mbps. There is no packet loss in my tests, just slow speeds. Rebooting the router fixes it for another day or two and then it returns.

So I replaced a router I have to reboot every week for a router I have to reboot every 2-3 days. I'm on the latest firmware (v1.05.22). The problem is definitely with the router and not the ISP connection since reboot returns the original expected speeds for a while. I'm also a network engineer for the ISP and I'm able to check that side of things and there is no problem.

Is this a common issue with this router? Does anyone have any suggestions?

I heard somewhere that enabling and then disabling QoS might temporarily solve it but that doesn't seem to help.

Many thanks

  • Where are you testing the speeds? Wifi speeds do vary depending upon neighboring wifi interference. How are your wired speeds?

Do you see the slow down from a close by wifi device?

I haven't tested the wired speeds yet since I'm focused on why the wifi speeds get slower after a couple of days and immediately get better after a reboot. The slowness occurs no matter how close I am to the router. I could be standing right next to it and I'd see roughly half the normal speed. Then if I reboot the router, normal speeds return for a day or two. It could be some wireless interference and perhaps a difference in channels being selected after a reboot, but it would be good to figure it out. Using a wifi analyzer while at the device that is furthest from my router, my wifi radio is 20dB hotter than the next most powerful radio.

Is the speed test done in the 5 or 6 Ghz band SSID? What channels are you using in these bands? Try using a manual least congested channel 36-48 or 149-161 with a 80 Mhz bandwidth (speed up to 2.9 Gbps) in the 5 Ghz band.
