Three options that have been discussed in several threads include
- Installing ZeroTier on the NAS
- Enabling OpenVPN (or equivalent) in your router (could require a new router).
- Forwarding ports for FTPS (configuring the NAS to only allow encrypted FTPS connections)

I use OpenVPN myself (which is built into my Orbi router).
