On the main issue, can the NAS reach the internet generally? "check for update" is one easy way to verify that it can.

Thanks for the info.
Will have to check the NAS unit internet connection when at the client again, although, according to the leafp2p log the vpn adapter is connecting to the Netgear server and getting an IP address.

If so, there is no reason to change the NAS network configuration (DNS, etc). It also seems unlikely that port forwarding would be needed, unless a firewall or proxy is interfering with the traffic flow to the NAS.
It'd sounding like the problem is on the workstation side of things.

Would you like me to upload the leafp2p log so that you can look at it? I see it establishes a connection with the user accounts I have setup, the disconnects with an error code 51.
If I can't get the ReadyNas remote to work, I thought I could install OpenVPN on the NAS unit and use that.
