DNS options for ReadyNAS?
I'm looking for some advice regarding setting up a DNS for my ReadyNAS. There is a very nice article on setting up a general website at http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24829/~/readynas-...

Hello Newsat1,
If you have already set up your own domain name from one of the DNS services, you can use your domain to access the web server after you forward HTTP port to the LAN IP of the NAS on your router settings. There is no setting on the NAS where you can enter the domain name.
If you are already using HTTP port 80 on another unit, you may need to change its listening port because it isn't easy to change it on the NAS, that will require you to change it from the backend.

If you are using ordinary DNS, you'll need to get a static public IP address from your ISP (so your router's external address is always the same). Then you need to create a DNS record that uses that address, and (as JennC says) forward the relevant port in your browser.
It's cheaper to use DDNS, but I don't think you can use your existing domain name if you go that route.

I'm not using a DNS at all, I simply purchased the domain name. There seem to be some third party applications for DNS available for ReadyNAS and I was inquiring about the simplicity and setup. I would like to use my ReadyNAS for all of my services. I am aware of the need for a static IP, but the domain name still needs to be associated with IP address through a service. I was just wondering if the DNS applications that are available work well for this? Do they also have mail exchange built into them? I was looking for someone who had used them for this purpose before, as I hate being a guineapig.

Generally the registrar you used to get the domain name takes care of DNS as part of the service. So start with them.
I don't think there are any apps on the NAS that will help with this.

I had a feeling you would say that, and I am checking with them now. I wondered would they take care of registering my static ip, but I haven't really been able to get a straight answer from them,as they only seem to want to sell me hosting services. Not a surprise. I am just trying to make sure I don't make a mistake this close to finishing my project.
There are third party applications for DNS from Poussin and ReadyNAS Guru. A mail server is available from the iredmail app. I'm going to find out what service comes with my domain name registration, but I am pretty sure I will need both a DNS and email exchange app to upgrade my ReadyNAS to match the services I would get from a hosting service. I might add the webdav for calendars and contact to round out everything I need, but I am pretty sure GoDaddy only offers these services if you pay for hosting.
