Removing and re-installing add-ons *should* work. However, there's no guarantee it actually does. Also, it is normally not necessary to remove an add-on before re-installing it. Removing of any existing versions of an add-on is part of the installation process.
As for the random errors: it might help if you could post at least the error message.
