What is the small risk and how small is it? When does it happen? If it does then is it bricked?

The problem can occur during the conversion or any OS upgrade thereafter. The reason is unclear, most do not have the issue. But several have reported it here. But native OS6 units do not have a vpd file, so Netgear never addressed this issue. They used to have somebody who could re-create it for you, but they no longer provide that. Yes, without a valid VPD, your NAS is essentially bricked. Your only option then is to get one from another unit and load it. Better to back yours up.

Just want to add that this is the case for both 4.2.x and OS-6. So you should back up the VPD even if you decide not to upgrade.
