ReadyNAS Vault : great but overpriced!
Hi!
Just saw the ReadyNAS Vault announcement : great news! Something I definitely need to really secure my data as my PC backups are, indeed, copied on my ReadyNAS Duo but still in the same location : at Home. :?
And Nice implementation from within Frontview...
BUT, one comment : your offer is significantly overpriced!
I can read here : http://www.netgear.com/readynasvault
Basic package per system: $5.95/month up to 5 GB, $.50/GB beyond
Business package per system: $19.95/month up to 20 GB, $.50/GB beyond
Packages are way too small : I have my Music library toping 40GB, Pictures reaching 27GB, etc... Just considering these volumes, cost will be up to $43,45 per month with the Business package! We are considering NAS online backup.
I guess you know LaCie One Year Online Backup offer is $99.95 per year, unlimited volume (Carbonite Online Backup service)...
Hope you'll re-evaluate your prices, considering competition...

Yes, but it is limited to a terabyte jumpstart, which doesn't seem to be that useful (and seems pretty pricey).sphardy wrote: If you are US based then CP offers a seeding option - they'll ship a disk that you can backup to and send back to CP to act as the initial backup - sphardy1Apprentice

For the average home user I think the deal is very reasonable.
While I have multiple Terabytes of data, the absolutely critical-cannot-afford-to-lose data aggregates to less than 1 TB. The cost of seeding CP is not much more than the price of a 1TB disk but is more secure - equivalent to the cost of storing a USB drive offsite but without the hassle + all the CP benefits. And I do consider it primarily an additional backup option for the worst case scenario.
I wish they offered this to non-US customers (when enquiring via their customer support I got fobbed off with the standard "We would like to but no schedule for it yet") - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Well for $125 they send you a disk (ground shipping), which you then load up and return to them (also ground shipping), so it takes at least 8-10 business days to get your first terabyte on their servers. That doesn't seem like a good deal to me, as I can upload that much data (or more) in the same amount of time.sphardy wrote: StephenB wrote: Yes, but it is limited to a terabyte jumpstart, which doesn't seem to be that useful (and seems pretty pricey).

If I had a slow uplink (as many home users do), it might be the only practical way to get started. But as it stands, it seems like a waste of money in my case.
