When you are playing media, are you using DLNA?
Also, can can you go into "turn windows features on or off" and make sure the SMB v1 client is enabled on the PC?

Hi StephenB
How can I tell if I am using DLNA?
I now have SMC v1 disabled due to serious security issues, however at the time I posted my message, it was partially active.
Are these going to be needed, moving forward? I now am worrying about security

But SMB v1 is required to access your old NAS - it's the only version of SMB that it supports. So if you don't use it, you will need to replace it with an OS-6 NAS like the RN212 (which supports the current SMB v3). You could then use the Duo to back up the RN212 (using rsync, and turning SMB off in the Duo).
Personally I don't see a lot of risk in using SMB v1 on a home network - particularly if you save the NAS account credentials in your PCs. But there's more than one view on that.

The SMB 1.0 implementations on both WIndows and SAMBA had some security vulnerabilities in the past - all were addressed by Microsoft resp. the SAMBA team virtually in days back then already. Most noise you are reading on the net is coming from these days.
As Microsoft has no need for it anymore in a plain and current Microsoft networking environment, SMB 1.0 became an optional component with the Windows features.
Of course you could argue that SMB 1.0 does not support advanced security features like packet signing or packet encryption. Trouble is that your NAS does only support NetBIOS discovery and name resolution and SMB 1.0 transport. Therefore, there is not much wrong with continuing the SMB 1.0 operations as long as legacy application and storage systems still require it.

Model actually is ReadyNAS NV+
Continuing the conversation. I decided to reinstall SMB 1 on my win 10 laptop, as after discussion with my IT guru, he said the security for my use at home was not really an issue
So now I have the same problem as prior to uninstalling SMB 1, namely that the drives are recognised, and work well, at first boot up of the ReadyNAS, but after a while the red crosses appear in the drives and I am not able to gain access.
To resolve all of this, I am thinking of buying a brand new RAID with latest everything on it, and migrating my data across, backing it up first of course. It would be better if I could continue using the existing HDD's in the new RAID. Any ideas?
