I just read the "ReadyNAS 300/500 Series Network Attached Storage (NAS) Data Sheet" and was surprised to see that there's a 10gb option for the RN516. I have a 516 and would love a 10g interface but I'm having trouble finding what card I would need for adding the interface. Should I be looking at something like an ax743? But that looks like it's specifically for a switch chassis.

A 10G module will be made available for the RN516 in the near term. It is not currently available. Riser card will be included in the upgrade kit. mdgm edit: There will be no 10G card made available for the RN516. The RN716X has two 10G ports.

I believe this is the one I purchased: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002C8JYRI/The solution isn't elegant, but it works, and Netgear isn't standing up to its promises (again). I'm not near my nas, but I believe I installed the card and used a short cable to attach the 10gb card which isn't securely mounted. Something like that. My only consolation in implementing such a less than ideal solution is that with the 516 being my 4th readynas this made me very comfortable with it being my last. I have a duo, an nv+, an ultra 6+, and now the 516 and I've had disappointments with each and every one (to be fair my biggest complaint with the 6+ is that very shortly after dropping the cash on it the newer models were announced and that model was left behind). After this disappointment I built a linux host with 6 drives plus ssd boot drive, hardware raid, xfs, 10g, linux, and it screams with regard to io and apps like plex. But I digress, 10g on the 516 does work, but i probably voided my warranty.

10G would be not supported on RN516. I think the datasheet is incorrect. It need fix.

all the 516's i have seen so far are missing the riser-card. without that card its impossible to add any 10g card to the system (a pci-e slot is there).

so i think even the newest data sheet is probably wrong.

Well if Microsoft can claim Ultimate WIndows will get you a subscription to amazing apps "in the future" and instead they discontinue the apps they give you, I guess anybody can lie and say features exist when they don't.

Okay, as this thread approaches the 1-year mark, I'd like to know where the optional upgrade to 10g is for the 516. Current documentation STILL LISTS 10G as an option on the 516. It's not hard to bottleneck the 516 on the pair of 1g interfaces, (I'd opine that it's rather hard not to).

I see the statement above that it'll be made available in the near term, but that was 11 months ago. I hope I'm missing something, but I'm thinking that royalef's statement above ("Using non-existent, "future" add-ons to inflate the specs of an existing product") is perfectly accurate. Again, I hope I'm missing something, because that doesn't leave me feeling very good as a customer :|

I don't have an RN516 but based on a few pictures of the 516 mobo (-> http://www.tuicool.com/articles/y6Rn63) I'm wondering if could you just use an off the shelf right angle PCIe x4 left slot riser (-> http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-PCI-Express-Riser-Card/dp/B004H5SJMA/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1405089681&sr=8-13)?

With the appropriate network card of course.
