Thanks for the idea, ahpsi. I think that's close to the right answer, but it seems that the mobo's power connector is in the way of inserting a card like the one you suggested (I bought it and tried :)
Perhaps one with a flexible cable might work? Something like, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004H6044U
I'm not sure how to secure the card with something like that, though.
The location of the slot seems to be a bit different for the 716, or Netgear uses a riser card with some sort of offset. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-reviews/32418-netgear-readynas-716-reviewed
