8TB HDD - Seagate ST8000AS0002

I know it's all theory at this point but do you think OS 6.x will support the new 8TB shingled magnetic recording drives? Retail is $260 which is certainly a bargain. Currently being shipped to Amazon they should be available the first of the year.

I'm buying into some large storage and wondering if I should hold off for a while...

Certainly that doesn't sound great, but it sure could be nice for a drive that doesn't see huge file transfer all the time.

If I got the math correct its about 90 minutes a day usage at 100 MB/sec. That would work for many backup scenarios.

It's also enough for over 8000 hours of BluRay streaming a year (and much more at lower rates), so it sounds like enough for most people's multimedia libraries.

That makes sense, and realistically, if you bust one in a few years, by then NAS drives will be available for cheaper at this capacity.

Now, to find out what equipment can handle them!
