Actually the NAS can monitor another system that is running NUT, it doesn't have to be another NAS (though that is how FrontView is worded). Currently my NAS is monitoring another server that is running NUT and is working fine. You may be able to do something similar.
Since NUT already supports an APC UPS it probably makes more sense to stick with this.
