APC UPS Client Add-on or Widget
** Moved from Developement Forum **
Hey guys, would it be possible to load a linux base client that would work with the APC Net Manager?
I have a TCP/IP based connection to my APC UPS and would like it to work with my NV+. But so far, the only IP that can be used with the Frontview is to monitor another NAS.
If this doesn't already exist, I think it would be a great add-on or widget for the community.
Does any body else think this a good idea?

- nycveloAspirant> NUT supports the APC SNMP card...
Yes, but that's a non-starter at least for me. We already have a bunch of APC gear, and apcupsd running on everything to control it.
It's not a good solution to force me to dedicate a separate APC UPS and then have to set up NUT just to control 1100s, especially since everything else in our network uses apcupsd...
thanks - brainjuiceAspirantI too would like to register my vote for the need to support networked APC UPSs. This is really a must have today.

This would be so useful....I understand that supporting a single protocol is a good path; but with so many folks having APC gear already some compatibility for the Network Management Card would be great. - ianmacdAspirant
dlipowsky wrote: Actually the NAS can monitor another system that is running NUT, it doesn't have to be another NAS (though that is how FrontView is worded). Currently my NAS is monitoring another server that is running NUT and is working fine. You may be able to do something similar.
For what it's worth, I have successfully set this up with an APC RT5000 XL (SURTD5000XLI) and an AP9619 management card.
I installed the NUT server on a Linux box and configured it to talk to the APC using the snmp-ups driver and the apcc MIB. At this point, I was able to query the status of the APC from any box on my network running the NUT client.
However, when I tried to tell the ReadyNAS to use the NUT instance on the Linux box for monitoring, it complained that it couldn't connect to it.
With tcpdump(8), I soon figured out what was going on. The ReadyNAS expects the UPS to be called -- oddly enough -- UPS in the NUT config. (Is this documented anywhere?) I'd called mine apc. Once I'd renamed it in /etc/ups/ups.conf and restarted the NUT server, the ReadyNAS was able to connect to it.
It's cool to be able to have the ReadyNAS's UPS monitoring work with non-USB APC units with a management card, but it would be nice if the extra computer running NUT weren't needed. I'd like to add my name to the petition to have this integrated straight into the ReadyNAS.
I suppose I could hack the ReadyNAS to run the NUT server with snmp-ups itself, but I'd rather not open that can of worms if I can avoid it. - schalliolAspirantianmacd, this is great progress. I would really like to get my NV+ working with my UPS' network management card. Since my unit also has a temp/humidity sensor, I assume that if we were to be able to get the system working directly to the network card, triggers such as humidity would work with the NV+'s system. I would like to avoid having to depend on another machine for UPS signaling.
- tcornishmnAspirantI also vote for native support of APC network UPS devices. My UPS is an APC SmartUPS 2200 that doesn't have USB.
- goreo95033AspirantI'd like to add my vote for network attached UPS support. I'm using an APC Symetra 8000 with its own Ethernet management card that alerts my numerous M$ Windows servers, and a 2000 vintage Quantum SNAP server of power failures for graceful shut-downs.
Thanks. - schalliolAspirantVote vote vote! Heh
Oooh, Symmetra. I've been impressed with those ever since APC sent me the VHS back in the 90's on the N+1 concept for the "Symmetra Power Array." - schalliolAspirantHere's a bump after a quarter has gone by. I would love to find a way to get my ReadyNAS to respond to its UPS' network management card if anyone has ideas.
- schalliolAspirantI too am interested in getting my APC Network Management card to talk to my UPS, as plugging in USB kills serial communication, including environmental temp/humidity monitoring. Over in this thread (last couple posts), it appears that it's possible to make NUT on the ReadyNAS to talk with the card directly, but I don't have the knowledge of how to go about adding this capability. I think someone more used to working on these types of devices will know after looking. Could someone take a look and let us know if there's anything you think we can do? Thanks!
