It uses them. For instance, here is a partial list of my /data volume.

    root@RN102://# btrfs subvolume list -a /data
ID 256 gen 9510 top level 5 path home
ID 259 gen 16084 top level 5 path .apps
ID 260 gen 9475 top level 5 path .vault
ID 262 gen 15210 top level 5 path Photos
ID 264 gen 16071 top level 5 path Music
ID 265 gen 15200 top level 5 path Documents
ID 266 gen 15196 top level 5 path Backup
ID 267 gen 15218 top level 5 path ._share
ID 268 gen 9603 top level 5 path .timemachine
ID 269 gen 15226 top level 5 path AudioBooks
    ID 1157 gen 962 top level 5 path ._share/Documents/.snapshot/c_1362546005
    ID 1159 gen 966 top level 5 path ._share/Photos/.snapshot/c_1362546012
    ID 1160 gen 1772 top level 5 path ._share/Movies/.snapshot/c_1362546016
    ...

There isn't anything explicit in the GUI that exposes all the details of the structure. You can see snapshots, roll back, etc. You cannot create your own subvolumes from the GUI.
  • Subvolumes are used as Shares, if you compare to existing RAIDiator OS. Backup share? Its a subvolume.

In the default X-RAID mode, you can only have ONE volume, called 'data'. Flex-RAID gives a bit more options.
  • Many thanks. This looks good.
Will it be possible to ssh and issue command line instructions to create sub volumes yourself, also when ceasing snapshots will it snapshot sub volumes also, or do you initiate the snapshot at the 'share' level?

The GUI is organized around shares, though as chirpa indicates, each share is a subvolume.

You can of course use ssh (my snippet above used that). There is no need for a separate add-on, you can enable it directly from the main gui. I don't know how manually creating subvolumes will impact the GUI (I haven't tried it).
