I am considering purchasing an EDA500 to expand my 8 bay unit. What version of SATA does the EDA500 support? Is the esata access to the EDA500 consideraby slower than just getting another 8 bay uni...

Getting a second 8-bay unit would give better performance.

What is the internal bus speed versus the esata bus speed? It seems like it is a $125 invesment vs $1,500

There is no processor or hardware RAID, all the I/O is done directly by the main NAS. So the internal bus speed of the EDA isn't relevant.
If you meant the SATA speed of the RN52x or RN62x - I think the relevant factor there would be the network performance. If you are running 10 gigabit, then you should see better performance from a second NAS. I don't think you'll see much difference on gigabit on sequential files access, but you might on random I/O loads.

True enough.
