Enable FTP on ReadNAS with TPLINK Router - Got it working

Well I have a ReadyNAS Duo and the expectation was I would be able to store and retreive data remotely.  Hah!  Its 2020 and this should be a lot easier than it is.

First, ReadyCloud- this app is junk, it almost never works.  I have everthing configured pursuant to the instructions on 3 PCs and sometimes I can get in and sometimes I cannot. This app (windows and Android version) cannot be relied on.

So that leaves us with remote FTP access.  Claimed to be easy?

All you have to do is get a free static domain name and do some port forwarding.

Step one- configure router and assign passive ports.

Here are my settings.

I set only 20 ports since it is just me accessesing remotely.

"Masquerate as" discussed below.

Step 2- Get a Dynamic DNS, since all of us are behind a router.

So I went to Dynu.com to get one of these.  Pretty easy, but turns out my TPLINK ARCHER C1200 does not support Dynu, it supports only DynDns (no longer an option) and No-IP.  Luckily TPLink has provided its own dynamic DNS for its products so you can just enter on on the screen to bind it to your router, if you can find it.  Here it is-

It took a few hours to bind.

Once bound you enter it in the "Masquerate as" field.

  • Step three would be to forward the passive ports and port 21 to the ReadyNAS.  If you haven't reserved the IP address in the router, you should also do that.

Another option, and the one I use, is a VPN.  I use ZeroTier loaded on the NAS and my devices, though there are other solutions including ones that run in your router.  This also supports remote backup without having to set up rsync over SSH, whihc ReadyCloud does not.

Which is what I do as well (using the OpenVPN feature of my Orbi system).  Then I can just use SMB as I would at home.

I supplement that with Resilio Sync running on an always-on PC at home that has the NAS volume mapped to a drive letter.  I find that to be a convenient way to selectively transfer files to my mobile devices, and also to automatically back up my photos.
