First Time Boot Question
I bought a diskless ReadyNAS 628X and added 48 TB of brand new hard drives. I just turned it on for the first time. The setup instructions said to wait for a steady blue "power led" and the IP to b...

2. You may have to open the front door to see it, but the blue power LED should be obvious when you do so. It’s not the O.K. button on the door.
3. The NAS has to create the RAID and the RAID sync does take a long time even for the faster initial sync.
4. No, however performance will be lower than normal till the sync completes.
5. Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't mean to nit pick, but I opened the door on my RN628X. There is no lit or unlit power LED anywhere. The hardware manual also doesn't show a location of any power LED behind the front door. There is a lit blue LED next to each drive bay, but the manual refers to those as "disk LED"s. Is there perhaps a blue LED adjacent to the actual power button that only glows once the resync data is complete? Thanks.

Well, there was no blue power LED that ever magically appeared. I think this is just an example of the Netgear "Installation" pamphlet not being accurate for all ReadyNAS models. Besides the blue push buttons on the front of the unit, the only blue LEDs present are behind the door, next to the drive bays. It would be nice if the pamphlet could be updated to warn the user that you should expect the message "resyncing data", even on a brand new diskless unit. With 48 TB of new hard drives, my unit was "resyncing data" for approximately 16 hours!. It would also be nice if the manual didn't ask you to wait for a steady blue power LED that doesn't exit. :)

Ah, I was thinking of the power LED on the previous generation.
The RAID is at a lower level than the filesystem and the disks do have to be synced sector by sector to setup the RAID. The resync time does vary depending on a number of factors including disk capacity.
You can use the NAS whilst the resync is in progress but the performance will be lower than usual.
It’s always a balance between providing enough information vs too much information in a quick start guide.

The instructions say "Wait for the Power LED to turn solid blue or for the status display screen to display the system’s IP address."
On systems that don't have the Power LED you'd wait till the status display screen shows the I.P. address. This should be pretty quick. If the screen has gone blank again you can use the arrows to find the I.P. address.
