The volume is expandable, in general you can't add in smaller drives to the existing array.
You could switch to FlexRAID, and create as second 4x4 TB RAID-5 volume. That would have have the space of your current volume (12 TB or ~10.9 TiB). Yhen you can shift some of your shares to the second volume.

Not something I've ever needed to do. It should be ok, as long as you don't block the airflow.
