You shouldn't need to have two versions of RAIDar. The new version 6.x should show a green check-mark on the disk (rather than a green light) if the disk is OK. Does it not show that for you?
Regarding home folders. When you create users then a home folder for that user is automatically created. This home folder is visible only to that user and the admin of the NAS. I believe that you cannot change this setting. I don't remember in OS5 if you can disable the creation of home folders when adding a user. I will check later for you.
Also, note that if you delete a user then the NAS will also delete that user's home folder.
