Normally you want to connect all your the wired devices to the switch (including the router). If you do that, then the router does not slow anything down - once the connection is established, the switch does all the work (the traffic never even reaches the router). So there is no reason to disconnect the router.
Homeplug on the other hand is certainly a bottleneck, it is much slower than gigabit ethernet.
